Referrals aren't cheating. They're how hiring works.
How to ask for a referral:
Build the relationship first
Make it easy: "Would you be comfortable referring me? I'll send my resume and why I'm interested."
Don't pressure. "No worries if not" is genuine.
What happens with a referral:
- Your resume goes to the top of the pile
- May bypass screening
- Referrer may get a bonus if you're hired
Even without a referral:
- Mention in your application: "I spoke with [Name] about this role"
- Follow up with the recruiter directly on LinkedIn
