Standard communities use bits for the ASN, limiting them to -byte ASNs. Large communities fix this.
Format: -bit fields.
- Global Administrator (your ASN)
- Local Data Part (function)
- Local Data Part (parameter)
Example: might mean "AS policy with value ."
Why large communities matter: With -bit ASNs now common, the old format couldn't represent them properly. Large communities give full ASN space plus more flexibility in encoding meaning.
Adoption: Defined in RFC (). Modern networks use them, but you'll still see standard communities everywhere.
