Mbps Ethernet (BASE-T) was the original speed. It uses Category or better cabling. Mbps Ethernet (BASE-TX), called Fast Ethernet, requires Category cables. You'll still see Mbps on older equipment or low-bandwidth devices like printers. Most new devices support Gigabit, but you should recognize these older standards on certification exams.
