Here's how CSMA/CD works. First, listen to the wire. If it's quiet, transmit. If you detect a collision during transmission, stop immediately. Send a jam signal so others notice. Wait a random backoff time, then try again. Each collision doubles the maximum wait time. After attempts, give up. This process wastes bandwidth, which is why full duplex replaced it.
