The EtherType field is bytes. It tells the receiver what protocol is inside the payload. Common values: 0x0800 for IPv4, 0x0806 for ARP, 0x86DD for IPv6. If the value is or less, it's the payload length instead (IEEE format). Most networks use EtherType format today. The receiving device uses this field to hand the payload to the right protocol handler.
