A switch is a Layer device. It reads the destination MAC address in each frame. It maintains a MAC address table mapping addresses to ports. When a frame arrives, the switch looks up the destination. If it knows the port, it forwards only there. Unlike hubs, switches give each port dedicated bandwidth. A -port Gigabit switch provides Gbps to each device.
