Link Aggregation lets you bundle multiple physical links into one logical link. If you have two Gbps connections, you can combine them into a single Gbps logical link. You get higher bandwidth and redundancy. If one physical link fails, traffic continues on the remaining links. STP sees the bundle as one link, so no ports get blocked. Link aggregation is also called port channel, EtherChannel, or LAG depending on the vendor. IEEE standardizes this.
