Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP), standardized as IEEE , dramatically improves convergence time. Instead of to seconds, RSTP can converge in under second in many cases. RSTP achieves this by allowing direct transitions from blocking to forwarding on point-to-point links, introducing proposal/agreement handshakes, and defining backup ports explicitly. Modern switches run RSTP by default. If you're still running original , you should upgrade.
