You can configure link aggregation statically or dynamically. Static aggregation (mode on) forces links into the bundle without negotiation. Both ends must match exactly. If you misconfigure one side, you can create a loop. Dynamic aggregation uses a protocol to negotiate the bundle. LACP (IEEE ) is the standard. PAgP is Cisco-proprietary. Dynamic protocols detect misconfigurations and prevent accidental loops. I recommend LACP for all new deployments. Static mode is risky.
