Use access ports for end devices that belong to one VLAN. Use trunk ports for switch-to-switch links and switch-to-router links. Access ports strip tags. Trunk ports preserve tags. If you accidentally configure an end device's port as a trunk, the device might not communicate because it cannot understand tagged frames. Always verify port mode when troubleshooting connectivity.
