A Layer switch performs routing in hardware. You create SVIs (Switched Virtual Interfaces) for each VLAN. The SVI acts as the default gateway for that VLAN. Inter-VLAN traffic stays within the switch and routes at wire speed. This eliminates the bottleneck of router-on-a-stick. Most enterprise networks use Layer switches for inter-VLAN routing.
