IP phones need priority treatment. Voice VLANs separate phone traffic from data traffic on the same port. A switch port configured for voice VLAN handles two VLANs: the data VLAN for the PC and the voice VLAN for the phone. The phone tags its traffic with the voice VLAN ID. The PC sends untagged traffic assigned to the data VLAN. This ensures voice packets get priority queuing.
