DHCP failures leave devices with no IP address or a APIPA address. The device cannot communicate beyond its local segment.
Symptoms:
- Device gets address
- "Limited connectivity" warnings
- Manual IP works but DHCP fails
Common causes:
- DHCP server down or unreachable
- DHCP scope exhausted
- DHCP relay not configured on router
Troubleshooting steps:
Check current IP with ipconfig
Release and renew the lease
Verify DHCP server has available addresses
Check DHCP relay configuration on routers
