CAPWAP (Control and Provisioning of Wireless Access Points) connects lightweight APs to their controller. It runs over UDP ports (control) and (data). When an AP boots, it discovers controllers through DNS, DHCP options, or broadcast. The AP downloads its configuration and firmware from the controller. Two deployment modes exist: local mode tunnels all traffic through the controller, while FlexConnect allows the AP to switch traffic locally when the WAN link fails.
