The GHz band became available with Wi-Fi E in . It adds MHz of spectrum, more than doubling the available airspace. You get additional MHz channels or ultra-wide MHz channels. Since only newer devices support GHz, the band stays uncongested. The range is even shorter than GHz, so you need more access points for coverage. As of now, GHz requires indoor-only operation in many regions.
