X is an IEEE standard for port-based network access control. When you plug into a switch port or connect to a wireless access point, X blocks all traffic until you authenticate. The port starts in an unauthorized state. Only authentication traffic passes through initially.
Once you prove your identity, the port transitions to authorized state and normal traffic flows. If authentication fails, you stay blocked. This prevents unauthorized devices from accessing the network even if they physically connect.
