Do this: "I'll start with requirements, then estimate scale, then draw the high-level architecture. Sound good?"
Not this: "What should I start with?"
Signpost your transitions. "Now that we have the high-level design, I want to examine the database schema." Your interviewer knows where you're going.
If stuck, say so. "I'm not sure about the best approach here. Let me think through options A and B."
