Counting with Forbidden Positions

Subtract what you cannot use

Sometimes certain positions have restrictions. For example: how many 3-digit numbers have no repeated digits?

First digit: 9 choices (1-9, no leading zero). Second digit: 9 choices (0-9 except first). Third digit: 8 choices (0-9 except first two). Total: 9×9×8=6489 \times 9 \times 8 = 648.
