When to Use GCD

Problem patterns

Use GCD when the problem mentions: simplifying fractions, common factors, reducing ratios, divisibility constraints, or repeating patterns with overlap.

Example phrases: reduce to lowest terms, greatest common measure, largest block size that fits both dimensions, maximum side length of square tiles.

If you see any number divided by another and asked for simplest form, think GCD immediately.
