In 2004, Sundar Pichai interviewed for VP of Product Management. An interviewer asked what he thought of Gmail.
The problem? Google had announced Gmail that same day, April 1st. Pichai had never used it.
Most candidates would have faked an answer. Pichai said: "I thought it was an April Fool's Day joke. I haven't been able to use it yet."
By his fourth interview, someone demonstrated Gmail to him. Only then did he share his real thoughts. His honesty impressed Google. He got the job and later became CEO.
